Designer bargain and no 'mistake'

IT MAY seem like a strange name for a business but “That Expensive Mistake” could be – and have – just what some people have been looking for.

The nearly new women’s designer outlet has been set up by self-employed bookkeeper Janie Bartlett and former interior designer Jaynie Fowles at premises in Swan Street, Kingsclere.

“Everyone has that expensive dress in their wardrobe, which they may never have even worn,” explained Jaynie.

“People can bring in their designer outfits and we will negotiate a price to sell it at. We will take 40 per cent commission and the seller will get 60 per cent.”

And there are certainly some bargains to be had. Among the names on offer are the likes of Gucci, Dior and even Victoria Beckham jeans. As well as an impressive array of dresses, there are also shoes and accessories such as handbags and jewellery that in many cases had been previously tucked away in the back of wardrobes.

“We had one lady who brought in an £850 Paul Costello coat, who wanted £150 for it,” said Jaynie. “This way we are helping people to recycle their wardrobes and make some money, so that if they wish they can still buy more designer clothing.”

Janie said: “If someone has a hankering for a Jimmy Choo pair of shoes or an Armani jacket, they can find it here.

“We have other labels like Christian Louboutin, Paul Costello, and other less expensive labels such as LK Bennett, Hobbs and Karen Millen, all at affordable prices.

“We are quite fussy in what we take – the condition must be excellent and we stock dresses from a petit six to size 20.”

The business is set to get off to a flying start on Thursday, February 23, from 5pm to 9pm with Champagne and nibbles, at an open sales night. To book a place, call 07525 794546.

The evening will officially launch the business, following two successful sales events prior to Christmas.
