Danes establish new base in city

AN innovative Danish engineering firm has established its first base in Southampton bringing new jobs to the city.
Eltronic will initially work with fellow Danish firm Vestas, based on the Isle of Wight, to design and make new machines and mechanical equipment to handle its giant wind turbines.
Headquarters in Hedensted, Denmark, with satellite offices in the USA, India, China and Malaysia, and production facilities in Poland, Eltronic already employs 135 engineers and technicians worldwide.
Helge Ramsing, project manager from Eltronic’s head office in Denmark, said the firm was now recruiting for five or six engineers this year in Southampton and hopes its new Ocean Village operation could expand to 30 staff in coming years.
He said the firm would be seeking further customers throughout the UK, bringing work and contract opportunities to south coast engineering companies and suppliers.
Vestas controversially closed down its turbine blade factory in Newport on the Isle of Wight in 2009 with the loss of 425 jobs but retained a growing research facility, developing prototype turbines.
It has plans to develop a new factory at Sheerness in Kent to meet UK orders for its offshore turbines.
