Appliance of science to help disabled
9:40am Tuesday 31st January 2012
PUPILS from The Romsey School, have taken up the “WeCan STEM Challenge”, to design or adapt a product to assist disabled people.
The scheme aims to give children studying science, technology, engineering and maths (hence STEM) the chance to put classroom knowledge to the test, in a real-life situation. Pupils from 10 schools in Hampshire have each entered teams of six who will work together for one term to design a new product, or adapt an existing one to support a disabled person, investigating what disability actually means and how it can affect people’s lives.
There will be a final at the end of March, where the winning team will automatically go forward to the Regional Big Bang Challenge, with a chance of making the national finals.
The launch took place at Portsmouth FC, where the students also got the chance to meet Paralympians, Bronwyn Carter and Lorraine Lambert.
